Brassroll's Exc.: questions and answers

Where is my data kept?

On your own computer, in an encrypted vault. Exc. works with no network connection and sends nothing to us.

How is it protected?

The vault's database is encrypted, with keys derived from your password. Each person (barrister, clerk) has their own login and role. The app locks itself after a period without use, or at once with Ctrl+L, and can be unlocked with Windows Hello, with your password still required regularly. Every change is recorded in a log that shows if it has been tampered with.

What if I forget my password?

A recovery code, printed when you set up the vault, resets it. Keep it somewhere safe and separate from your computer.

How do backups work?

Exc. makes encrypted backups to a folder you choose, such as an external drive, on demand and automatically, and can test-restore a backup without touching your vault. Before an update changes the vault, it first makes a backup of it.

Can a clerk use it on another computer?

Yes. Changes are carried between computers in encrypted, signed change packs, by USB drive or through a shared folder you choose. The vault itself is never put in the shared folder.

Does it export my data?

Yes: every record as JSON and CSV files for Excel. Exports are not encrypted, and the app says so before saving them.

How do I join the beta?

Email us. A beta for small-firm solicitors is coming soon.
